Un chico despierta del coma y acusa a su propia madre de ser una impostora

Cuando mibis.childhood in the Welsh valleys me taught that family stories often hide more than they explain, this new Hulu series immediately caught my attention: Sonny Cooke wakes from a coma certain that the woman beside his bed is not his real mother. The mystery is compelling precisely because nobody else seems to notice any change.

Una sospecha que nadie más comparte

Sonny is a popular teenager with a close relationship with Ellen, the director of his school. After a car accident leaves him in a coma, he begins searching for evidence that the woman presenting herself as Ellen is an impostor. The complication is that friends and colleagues continue to describe her exactly as before, while Sonny has no access to older photos or videos to support his doubts.

To investigate, he relies on Mallory, a friend from before the accident; Weldon, her cousin; and Sharla, a private investigator drawn to conspiracy theories. Nick Paley, who co-wrote Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, created the series, which stars Sam Nivola and Connie Britton.

Nivola carries the transformation from carefree teenager to increasingly anxious and paranoid young man, while Britton keeps Ellen ambiguous through gestures and silences. That uncertainty gives the story its tension: it is never entirely clear whether something has genuinely changed in Ellen, or whether Sonny is interpreting the situation in a way that convinces him. The word hyn, meaning this, in Welsh, seems fitting for a mystery that refuses to settle into a neat answer, although here it is not a word spoken in the series but a useful reflection for anyone following the story.

• Farsante is an eight-episode series available on Hulu.
• The premise combines psychological thriller, black comedy and family drama.
• Sam Nivola and Connie Britton lead the cast.
• The story moves at an agile pace and does not offer a tidy explanation.

I found the series especially effective because it does not treat its own mystery too solemnly. Suspicion, anxiety and uncertainty coexist with humor, and the atmosphere of distrust matters more to the story than a final reveal. Have you ever distrusted someone close without being able to explain why? Share your experience below, and if you enjoy stories that mix tenderness with unsettling questions, give Farsante a try.
